Welcome to my first ever WordPress Wednesday!
I get a lot of questions about how to do certain things on a wordpress.com blog/website, so I thought I’d start up WordPress Wednesdays to give some tips, tricks, and how to. There are so many tips and tricks I want to cover, but we need to start with the basics. So, today we’re going to start with the choosing a theme that’s right for your blog and the wonderful world of widgets.
Choosing a theme for your blog is a lot like interior decorating. You want to design something that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye, but also your style. You need it to be easily navigable and easy to read.
In the themes section, you will find that some themes were made with certain kinds of blogs in mind. For example, there are themes geared toward photographers, some for e-zines, and others for cooking. What you need to do is pick the theme that speaks to you and what you want to show the world. Once you have your theme, you can easily change the background and colors from your Appearance settings.
You need to make sure your blog is user friendly. For example:
- Be sure to have a search option.
- Have an about page.
- If you are offering services, have a contact page.
- Make sure it’s easy to navigate!
The list can go on. Just make sure anyone can find anything they want to find on your blog. It’s that simple.
Once you choose a theme, especially if you’re setting up for the first time, you’ll see that a snazzy saying about your site being a wordpress site shows up usually around the title of your blog. This would be a good time to either get rid of it or think up a snazzy saying of your own. Also, you’ll see that certain widgets come on your blog automatically when you first start up. Once again, we’ll head over to our hand dandy Appearance tab, and then click Widgets.
Browse through the widgets. First, start off by seeing what is already there. If you don’t know what it is or it isn’t useful, remove it. Then, look through the available widgets and click which ones you want and under which sidebar or footer you want it to appear (some themes will have multiple options, others won’t). Each widget will ask you to give it information so that things can properly displayed. Once this is done, go and view your blog. If you want to move any of the widgets around, simply go back to the widgets page and drag them to where you want them and in what order.
So there you have it. A quick way to find new themes, set them up, and a little about widgets. If you would like more information on this, just ask your questions in the comments below or send me an email if you’re shy! Do you have a request for an upcoming WordPress Wednesday? Just let me know! I’ll see what I can do. 🙂 Thanks for reading!
