My Plant Obsession

As I mentioned in my last post, I seem to have a small obsession with plants. This has been a more recent development in the past few years.  It all started with a small Christmas cactus I found at the grocery store.  I always have liked them and my mom and grandmothers all had one.  I decided that it would be perfect and bought it.  I replanted it into a slightly bigger and nicer pot with some soil I got from my dad, placed it on my window sill in the kitchen, and was happy.

Then, I decided to try to have a garden on my balcony the following summer.  That failed. Miserably.  Horribly, even!  I didn’t let that discourage me though.  I vowed to figure out what went wrong and try again.

The following Christmas, my dad gave me an Amaryllis.  It’s been over a year and still hasn’t bloomed for me, but I do enjoy it.  I have faith that it will some day bloom when I get the settings just right.

Then, summer came (this is now last summer).  While walking around the gardening store, I asked some questions and found out what I had done wrong the previous gardening attempt on my balcony.  I had used gardening soil instead of potting soil.  Gardening soil keeps the moisture around the plants and is for large flower beds and the like. Potting soil let the water trickle through so as not to rot the roots in my container garden.  I couldn’t believe I hadn’t realized my mistake.  So, with that, I bought my plants and a few new containers, potting soil, and started my balcony garden oasis.  It worked!  I had such a great turnout for the year that I can’t wait to do it again this year and.. yes… add more plants! 😀

However, when the cold came, I had to move a few plants inside to keep them going throughout the year and… yes… I acquired more plants.  Some of them go outdoors in the summer, some of them stay inside.  Still, I love having my plants!  The plant stands I keep them on have managed to allude my kitties from nomming on them for the most part.  I’m sure that if I had more room, I’d have more plants.  I still have some room left though….  😉

This is my narrow plant rack. It's perfect for my plants that are sensitive to light.

This was my mom's hot air balloon planter that I rescued from her selling in a garage sale. I just had to put it to use. :)

I found it random that my geranium sprouted one tiny flower in the middle of winter.

Yep. I have a solar plant. I call it a doomp doomp. Why? Because that's the sound that comes to my mind when the leaves move. :p

I am so over this snow! Come on spring! I want to plant my garden!

So, now you’ve seen my current plant collection.  I suppose I’ll count the little solar one, too. :p  I’m looking forward to owning a couple more plants I aim to have and then planting my balcony oasis this year.  There will be lots of basil, parsley, tomatoes, and maybe a couple pepper plants. 🙂

I never thought I’d have a green thumb.  Perhaps it was the year and a half that I stayed with my grandma that engaged my green thumb.  I was always looking at plants and even bringing a few small ones home for her since she loved them so much.  Either way, I now love having plants and gardening during the warm months.  I think if she could see my little collection now, she’s be rather proud. 🙂
